Our concertinas – Built in the style of the late Harold Herrington who was a pioneer in hybrid Anglo concertina making. The external design of our concertina is similar in many ways to traditional English-made instruments. They are hexagonal measuring 6-1/8'' across the flats. The reeds are mounted in a reed pan and are parallel to the end. The ends are cut in metal with a raised crimped construction or from wood in a traditional thorn vine pattern. These sets are referred to as Herrington Classic models. We also have our own end plate design as well which offers an aesthetic variation on a vintage design. The fingering arrangement is based on the C. Wheatstone Anglo System (thirty-button chromatic). We do offer Jeffries layout upon request as well. The concertina end assembly is in three pieces stacking together like a sandwich. These consist of the end plate, action frame with action pad with working action mechanism, and the bellows frame which holds the reed pan. The screws that hold the assembly together are located at the corners rather than in the middle of the sides. This makes for a very positive airtight lock up and should eliminate any problem with reed-pan warping which is all too common on vintage instruments.
Materials – We use high quality materials in all of our concertinas. We use instrument grade domestic and exotic hardwoods for the action, hand-rests, and wooden endplates. Metal components used in our instruments consist of solid metal, no brass plated steel parts, etc.
Steel Reeds – We use only hand finished Italian steel reeds, A-Mano or Tipo A-Mano, depending on the set. Were making high quality durable instruments so why not use the best reeds available.
Bellows – We use the finest materials available for the bellows as well as traditional manufacturing methods, acid-free card, bias-cut linen, hide glue, and finely skived leather for a bellow that is airtight. We make six and seven fold bellows depending on the set.
Action – We use a traditional riveted action design for fast playing and a quick response.
Buttons– We use Delrin® for all of our buttons as well as the cores for brass capped buttons.
